A New Home, New Future for Ride Connection
Ride Connection has been steadily outgrowing its current space near OHSU on the South Waterfront area. The Ride Connection facilities committee was developed to weigh a number of variables. Ideally, Ride Connection wanted a permanent place to call home that centered on community. “We wanted to create a space that benefits our communities -- where community could gather to learn about transportation options,” said Elaine.
To fulfill its vision, the committee reached out to Reach and Human Solutions since housing and transportation are key components in promoting healthy, livable communities. Reach works to provide quality, affordable housing for individuals and families and Human Solutions helps low-income and homeless families gain self-sufficiency by providing affordable housing.
The three organizations eventually focused in on a plot of land positioned on NE 99th and Glisan near the Gateway Transit Center.
Together the three organizations worked to formulate a viable plan for the space near Gateway by positioning senior and workforce housing beside Ride Connection’s main office.
Portland Housing Bureau has ownership of the land at Gateway and after a review of proposals, the $1.5 million property was awarded last Friday to Ride Connection, Reach, and Human Solutions given that their plan for the use of the land was closely on par with the city’s priorities to create livable and sustainable communities. “It is no coincidence that Ride Connection serves the same group of people who will be residing in the new housing developments at Gateway. This was a very carefully thought out plan and we’re absolutely thrilled to be working with Reach and Human Solutions,” says Elaine.
Ride Connection’s next step is raising money for the future building with the hopes of breaking ground in a year.
