Q &A with Chris, a Travel

1.

Commission for the Blind this summer

Oregon School for the Blind and the
Columbia or Northwest Regional
Programs during the regular school year
to keep their travel skills current during
the summer months!!

New Partners
Q. I am a Senior Citizen whose friend was
recently travel trained, I was wondering if
there is any way that I can get involved.
A. RideWise is always looking for new
volunteers. If you or anyone lese would like to
become a volunteer please contact James
Uyeda at 503.528.1748 or at
juyeda@rideconnection.org
Q. What type of volunteer opportunities are
there available through the RideWise
program?
A. The volunteer positions are Volunteer
Travel Trainer, Travel Host, and Co-Presenter.
All of the volunteers are called Ride
Ambassadors. The volunteer travel trainers
assist in providing either one-on-one or group
travel training. The travel hosts assist
individuals at various transit centers with their
questions and transfers. The co-presenters
assist at various events and letting others in
their community know about the RideWise
program.
We would like to thank our new partners for
the month of May for helping individuals
become more independent and self-sufficient.

Tips of the Month
This Month’s Success Story
In addition to the upcoming changes on the I-
205/Portland Mall, The Clackamas Town
Center Transit Center is also in the process of
changing. Per
http://trimet.org/alerts/clackamstc.htm
“Construction at Clackamas Town Center is
underway. As a result, some bus traffic within
the Transit Center has been rerouted and bus
stops have been temporarily moved. The bus
stops for Lines 29-Lake/Webster Rd, 152-
Milwaukie, 155-Sunnyside, 156-Mather Rd
and 157-Happy Valley have been moved across
the street to the north side. The Line 28-
Linwood stop has moved around the corner to
the Line 31-Estacada stop. The new stops are
posted with A-board signs.”
This month’s success story is about a young
man involved with Reynolds Youth
Transitional Services. His case manager was
assisting him in travel training but asked
RideWise for additional assistance. The young
man had a new work experience and needed to
learn a new route. The case manger taught him
the route but did not have all the necessary
time. RideWise was able to supplement the
training and the young man was able to
successfully and independently travel to and
from his work experience on public
transportation.
As with any new route or update:
Scout the route before taking an
individual out. Completing a path of
travel analysis prior to taking someone
out on the system ensures that the
trainer knows if the trip is accessible to
the individual based on their ability
level and conditions.
