RideWise Success Stories
Jennifer is a 25 year old female with a cognitive disability who was getting
ready to move into her own apartment in a supported
independent living community. Jenny was interested in learning
how to ride the bus from her new apartment to work at a restaurant.
Jenny had never ridden the bus on her own so this was a completely
new experience for her. The Travel trainer and Jenny identified
landmarks for her to use by work and her apartment so she knew
when to get off at each destination. Soon she was able to use public
transportation safely and independently. Jenny is successfully
living on her own for the first time and traveling independently
in the community.
Brandon,
a 21 year-old non-verbal post high school transition student, was
referred to the RideWise program by the staff at his
school. Brandon loves TriMet and riding the bus and would ride
the bus all day, everyday if he was allowed to do so. He had ridden
few times by himself, but fell asleep one time and got lost. His
teachers decided that they needed to make sure he was able to ride
safely and independently. Brandon rides from a physical education
program back to his school. He has demonstrated that he is a safe
rider and will be exiting the program soon, after he graduates
from his transition program
